Born on the 8th of October, 1945, Jean-Louis TOURAINE was a student at the Medical and Scientific University of Lyon (1962-71). He completed this formation by research activities in Scotland (Edinburgh, 1969) then in the USA (Minneapolis 1972, New York 1973).

Medical doctor since 1972 (medical thesis on “Human renal transplantation and antilymphocyte globulin”), he was appointed Professor in Medecine at the Claude BERNARD Medical and Scientific University of Lyon in 1979. Since that time he delivers courses in Nephrology, Transplantation as well as Clinical and Basic Immunology. More recently he also started teaching Bioethics, Foetology and Retrovirology. He was Head of the Department of Transplantation and Clinical Immunology at the University Hospital of Lyon (Pav. P, Hôpital Edouard HERRIOT) from 1986 to 2012, then becoming a Consultant. He now is Emeritus Professor at Lyon University and runs a research laboratory on Immunodeficiencies and Retrovirology.

Elected Mayor of the 8th district of Lyon in 1995, he became 1st Deputy Mayor of Lyon from 2001 to 2014. He was also elected Member of the Parliament (Deputy at the French National Assembly) from 2007 to 2012, then from 2012 to 2017, and again from 2017 to 2022.

He now is Vice-president of the Social Affairs Commission at the National Assembly.
